Dr. Hammett serves on the staff of Virginia Tech's Center for Forest Products Marketing and Management. The Center provides education programs and market information for the forest products sector. On campus he teaches courses in non-timber forest products, global natural resources, and world forestry and forest products. He heads Virginia Tech's program focused on non-timber forest products (NTFPs). HIs outreach and research is focused on niche markets, small forest-based enterprises and forest products certification. Dr. Hammett currently has projects focused on the utilization and marketing of NTFPs in the Appalachian region, as well as in Nepal, South and Central America, and Africa.
He moved to Virginia Tech in 1995 from the position of Research Scientist and Senior Faculty Fellow at Yale University's School of Forestry where he served three years as the Team Leader for a project that supported the development of Nepal’s only forestry college. While in Asia his research activities focused on utilization and trade of non-timber forest products and the management of forest-based enterprises. Dr. Hammett has authored a book on trade of forest products and numerous articles and publications based to his work in the US and overseas. His international work has included developing a locally managed market information systems for non-timber forest products in the Philippines, identifying value added opportunities for NTFPs in Asia, conducting a sustainable natural resources-based enterprises training in the Dominican Republic, organizing local forest industry centers in Thailand, and coordinating the first regional training program in marketing of NTFPs for Asia.
In his spare time, Dr. Hammett enjoys biking, tennis, gardening, and traveling.

Virginia Tech Study Abroad Fair.
The annual September Study Abroad Fair, hosted by the Education Abroad Office of OIRED, is the premier Virginia Tech promotional opportunity for education abroad programs and draws approximately 4,000 students through the Drill Field tent location in one day.
Bob Wright and Tom Hammett co-represented the College of Natural Resources at this event on 26-September, 2007.
From this initial fair, plus subsequent information sessions and mini-expo fairs, the CNR study abroad programs in the south pacific region registered 53 student programs including 5 graduate student programs from the northern Virginia Master of Natural Resources (MNR) program and 6 undergraduate students in CNR. This is an increase in student programs by a factor of five over 2006 registrants. The course is entitled: “Sustaining Human Societies and Their Natural Environments”.
Bob served on the graduate committee for one of the MNR students in the 2007 programs.
As ad hoc manager of program promotion, on-campus logistics, registration, applicant review and acceptance, Bob Wright contributed 70% of the total time required through personal evening time.
To manage idiosyncrasies of registration in this developing program, Bob worked directly with Associate Registrar Marvin Foushee.
Bob scheduled and led evening information sessions for interested students, he made an invited presentation (from Eric Hallerman, Head of Fisheries and Wildlife) in front of the faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife regarding the programs. With Tom Hammett, he met with Bill Carstensen, Head of Geography, to discuss the programs. Presentations were made to several other faculty in other departments. With a representative from the academic company American Universities International Programs (AUIP), Bob and Tom made several 10 minute in-class presentations to dozens of classes in November, 2007.
Bob has worked extensively, through email and telephone, to address questions and concerns from students and student’s parents regarding these programs. Working with students he has written multiple course substitution requests, fulfilling specific check-list requirements for the student participants.
Bob secured a faculty member from the Biological Sciences Department, Earth Sustainability program as substitute for the south pacific programs in 2008. With this faculty member and developing connections within the Biological Sciences department we intend to cross-list our course for specific biology credits. A similar effort is being considered for wildlife biology credits. Precedents have already been established for such credits via successful course substitution requests. A Suma Cum Laude 2008 undergraduate in Fisheries and Wildlife was one such example.
Bob and Tom are working with AUIP to develop a hybrid “Wintermester” CNR / south pacific program to operate from roughly 17-December to 10-January for 6 credits in NR 3954 / NR 5954.
